"Slate quarries define the town, a place where the work is hard, the roots are deep, and the Thursday night pork roast supper at the Methodist church is standing room only." — Chronicle, The Boston Channel, "Main Streets and Back Roads — Granville, N.Y.," June 13, 2003
Granville was founded in 1780 and built on the slate industry — but it's the schools, the churches, the volunteer fire departments, and the year-round community events that keep it together. Here's how the community runs.
Granville is served by the Granville Central School District — three campuses educating area children from elementary through high school.

Beyond schools and churches, Granville's community runs on a network of volunteer and civic organizations:
Granville coordinates with surrounding towns — including Poultney, VT — to run a multi-town summer recreation program for area youth.
Current programs, schedules, and registration are maintained by the Poultney Recreation Commission. The Granville Central School District also publishes an annual list of regional summer youth options for area families.

Granville was founded in 1780 and grew up around its slate industry — producing stone in a rare variety of colors, including green, gray, gray-black, purple, mottled green and purple, and red. The town has long been considered the Colored Slate Capital of the World.
