Mettowee Valley Ecumenical Council
The Mettowee Valley Ecumenical Council (MVEC) is an association of churches in Granville and surrounding areas who choose to work together on certain community projects and to occasionally share together in worship. Any local church is welcome to participate at whatever level of involvement it wishes.
Pastors and lay representatives from participating churches meet once a month to discuss mutual concerns, to plan joint ministries which may benefit the community, and to enjoy fellowship. The monthly MVEC meetings also provide a forum for the sharing of ideas and information and for guest speakers to present ideas for building up our community.
The MVEC sponsors an ecumenical food pantry, housed at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, which each year feeds hundreds of needy residents of the Granville school district. Each month a different church takes responsibility for packing the food baskets, which are distributed Saturday mornings to those who have applied for help to the Rectory at St. Mary’s before Friday afternoon. The MVEC also sponsors an annual CROP Walk, which finances food programs in our community and around the world.
Also, the MVEC supports a coat closet, housed at Peniel Presbyterian Church, which on certain Saturday mornings in late fall and early winter provides free winter coats, hats, boots, etc.
Other special events sponsored by the MVEC include: a one-week, ecumenical Vacation Bible School each summer, a Baccalaureate Service each June for the graduating seniors of Granville High School, a Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service, once-a-week worship services with a simple lunch during Lent, an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service, and an Easter Sunrise Service in Veterans Park.
